With Light the Fuse, Krieg can have an easy time against this boss in solo play. The Flame of the Firehawk can prove very useful during the second phase of the fight, due to a large amount of enemies present. With the Grog Nozzle or Rubi in hand, several means can be employed for this purpose: shooting the Unkempt Harold then quickly swapping to either of the aforementioned guns, throwing a grenade such as the Quasar, Chain Lightning, Storm Front, or Bonus Package. Like when fighting most raid bosses, some form of quick health regen is recommended throughout the fight. The Son resists damage done by Logan's Gun, however, despite the damage being incendiary. Special projectiles that are considered rockets, such as those fired by Logan's Gun or the KerBlaster, are not deflected.
The skill B0re allows Zer0's bullets to bypass this deflection.
His shell can also deflect bullets, possibly sending them back at the shooter, therefore shooting at his shell at close range is fairly dangerous. While his underbelly takes less Corrosive damage than his shelled backside, it is vulnerable to fire. Slag effect also wears off very quickly against him. He heavily resists corrosive, explosive, and slag. The Son has little to no resistance to shock, and non-elemental damage works fine against him. It is possible to remove his claws when dealing enough damage to these points. The Son has four critical spots, which are four glowing purple orbs on his chest and behind his arms. Otherwise, he will do the diving attack after shooting corrosive orbs and/or doing the claw attack a few times. Staying too close to the Son makes him use the diving attack more frequently. After the Son dives underground and regenerates health for the second time, he will start using another attack, which is spewing a stream of corrosive liquid in an area in front of him, but this attack does not deal heavy damage. The Son's corrosive orbs can be dodged more easily by sprinting either in the opposite direction, or in the same direction as they approach. As the boss's health goes down, however, there will be more varkids and they will morph more frequently, resulting in a greater number of tougher enemies, including Varkid Incinerators, Varkid Electrocutioners, Varkid Disintegrators, Badass Varkids, and even Ultimate Badass Varkids. These enemies consist of craboids and varkids, and a powerful shot from a launcher will easily take them out. Once the second phase of the fight starts, other enemies will spawn continuously, providing an infinite source of Second Winds. Even though risky, doing this enables Krieg to use Release the Beast constantly. One way around this is to shoot at his shell and take damage from the reflected bullets. For melee-focused characters, sometimes it could actually be hard for them to utilize roid damage if they keep sticking close to the boss and circling him, because they will not get hit very often. He will also constantly try to run away to regain distance. This is an opportunity to either heal or move to in front of him to land critical hits.
Even if he does, in most cases he will only hit once (sometimes twice) before rising high up in the air and roaring, exposing himself for a few seconds.
If this is done right, it becomes very hard for the boss to land a hit. A good approach during this phase is to get close to the boss as quickly as possible, then strafe him constantly while sticking close to him. The most difficult part of the fight when trying to solo him is the beginning, because there are no enemies available for Second Winds until after he dives into the ground to regain health for the first time. He can do this a total of three times - at about 70%, 40%, and 25% health. A final move that he uses is not a damaging one: when his health is low enough, he will glow white and dive into the ground for a period of time, regaining some health. The first is a claw attack that will put a Vault Hunter very close to Fight For Your Life the second, a volley of corrosive orbs with a small splash radius in a quick succession, which can be dodged at long ranges and the third, a dive into the ground and back up, doing damage in an area symbolized by a purple circle as well as knocking the Vault Hunter airborne. The Son has a rather high amount of health and three very powerful attacks.
